Getting to Know the Different Political Parties Represented in Philadelphia
Philadelphia is one the largest cities on the Eastern coast of the United States and it is in fact the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania. It was one of the earliest American cities, being founded by William Penn in 1682 and it has grown to become one of the most populous cities in the nation. The name itself is pretty big; the Greek words philos and adelphos are compounded into the word that is now written as Philadelphia meaning “City of Brotherly Love”. The city, as big as it is, is also one of the leading cities avoiding corruption on its political side. As usual, with any large city taking its hold on the nation, politics will become a major game changer in the area and it is important to know and understand a little bit about the political parties represented in Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania as well.
Philadelphia had, for the longest time until the middle of the 20th century, been a strong supporter for the Republican Party. It was after the Great Depression of the late 1920’s and early 1930’s when the area became a stronghold for the Democratic Party. In the last election, President Barack Obama had 83% of the people’s votes. Of course these are not the only political parties represented in Philadelphia. Being a strong political center, there are some others as well. The total listing for all the political parties that are active in Philadelphia is up to sixteen at the moment.
Another prominent political party in the City of Brotherly Love is the Libertarian Party. This is also the third largest political party in the area. Though they are not as numerous as those representing the Republican and Democratic Parties, the Libertarian Party is a well known and well supported political party in Philadelphia although the numbers still clearly support the Democratic Party above any other.
Smaller national political parties include the Constitution Party, the Green Party, the Natural Law Party, the Reform Party, and the Socialist Party. Also included are the America First Party of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Patriot Party, the Pennsylvania Marijuana Party, the Pennsylvania Prohibition Party Committee, the Socialist Labor Party, the Workers’ World Party, the Pennsylvania American Reform Party and the Communist Party of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. These are all the registered and active political parties that you will find represented in the city of Philadelphia. There are also many other smaller chapters working with these political parties and on their own individual agendas as well.
On the Republic side of things lately there has been a call for a bill to be passed that will allow a voucher for schools that will support parents to transfer their children out of ill-reputed schools into better learning establishments. The Democratic party has lately been voicing the problems that the city and the state in general would face as far as concerns regarding the new zoning changes that are meant to redistrict the layout of Philadelphia.
