The history of Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the sixth largest city in the USA and the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania. It is often called the city of brotherly love.During the time of the American revolution this city was the most important center of the States.
The city was founded by William Penn who had a vision of a city with a huge tolerance for religions, later this city became one of the biggest centers of the USA when it comes to tolerance of any type.

The first Europeans that came to the territory of Philadelphia were Swedes, they established a community near the current city around 1643.
However the real expansion and development of the city began when England established control over this region and in 1681 king Charles II made William Penn a grant of land that we know today as Pennsylvania.
Penn came to the land in 1682 and started building a new city in the southeast corner of the colony, called Philadelphia.
During the town’s establishment the guiding principle for further development of the city was tolerance for all faiths no matter where they come from. This fact allowed the people of Philadelphia to develop without restrictions, people were able to trade and share their experiences from different parts of the world and build a society with high tolerance.
William Penn was ahead of his time when he realized that the only way for prosperity is to be tolerant and allow people to express themselves.

During a time when the city was expanding rapidly, trading business became very important for the citizens and soon it became the biggest and the most important city in the colonies.
One of the most important people that had a strong impact on Philadelphia but also on American history was Benjamin Franklin. He is often considered to be one of the most important scientists of that time and one of the guiding lights of the Revolution.
Throughout the War of Independence the city was an unofficial capital and the Continental congresses were held there. After the war one of the most important legal documents in American history, the Constitution was written at the convention in Philadelphia.

After this golden era the city of Philadelphia was still developing; many new suburbs were built but it couldn’t follow the huge steps of expansion of the cities such as New York or Chicago.
Although it was no longer the largest and the most important city in the States, this city was host for another major event in American history, the Declaration of Independence, which was also written in Philadelphia in 1876.
The city today is still taking care of cultural heritage and has many museums that remind us of the history of this very important city in American history. One of the biggest places that remind us about history is the Independence National Historical Park.

Philadelphia today is the most important city in the States when it comes to tolerance and culture.
It is a cultural center with a huge variety of attractions that attract people from all over the world to see the city where everyone is welcome and where one of the biggest moments in American history happened.
