The Important Legislations That Effect Philadelphia and It’s People

For as long as it can be remembered, since the beginning of our existence as a country, Philadelphia has been in the thick of many of the political events in the US. They have been a city that has prided itself on not only being one of the better places to live in the country with a sound economy but as a hub of important bills/pieces of legislation that affect Philadelphia and influence others.

The major political parties that you will find in the city of Philadelphia are the Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and Green Party. Even though there are a list of other parties from the America First Party of Pennsylvania all the way to the Socialist Party of Pennsylvania. With all the different parties there are in the area, you will however, only see two parties listed on their state ballads  and that would be the Democratic and Republican parties. Below are the three biggest parties represented.

Democratic Party

Has been around for a very long time and has a hugely successful history in Philadelphia and all through the state of Pennsylvania and currently has voted for all Democratic Presidents since 1988. They have a high interest in jobs, the economy, voting rights, education, protecting seniors and their rights, the environment and government reform.

Republican Party

They take pride in the fact the very first national convention was held in Pennsylvania in 1856 just two years after the Republican party was founded and they have had strong public support for many, many years since that day. They are in opposition to President Obama and cite that he has violated the constitution not once but ten different times. They are strong on tax reform and many other issues that have the Democrats and Republicans butting heads.

The Green Party

The mission behind this political party is to try to help promote all Green values throughout the state of Pennsylvania by electing candidates with like minds, getting involved in legislation, organizing groups in communities such as Philadelphia and trying to make the government more open, more truly democratic and easier for citizens to participate in.

Bills Supported by the Two Major Parties

Important bills/pieces of legislation that effect Philadelphia have passed recently that have had the support of both the Democratic and Republican parties. One such bill was unanimously approved by the Senate and that was giving the mayor of Philadelphia much more power over the PHA or Philadelphia Housing Authority.

This bill will give Mayor Nutter the authority to appoint all the members of the board of commissioners and there will now be nine members appointed instead of the five from previous years. This is a big step in getting back control of the PHA since the federal government stepped in last March and took control of the PHA because of its overspending on lawyers for what turned out to be a secret settlement for three sexual harassment charges against Carl Greene, former executive director of the PHA.

Bills Proposed by the Republicans

The Republicans are working on important bills/pieces of legislation that will affect Philadelphia teens when it comes to what is called sexting and cyber bullying. It is setting down guidelines in order to stop this type of behavior that is damaging even to the point of someone getting injured or even killed. This will make it a second degree misdemeanor if any teen is caught doing any kind of sexting. Republicans expect that the bill will soon end up on the desk of Governor Corbett.
