The People of Philadelphia

The population of Philadelphia stands at 1,526,006 according to the 2010 census. It is a metropolitan and is made of all races. About 96.2% of the population lives in households, 2.5% live in non-institutionalized group quarters and 1.3% are institutionalized. The median income for a household is about 37,000 dollars whereas the one for a family is 46,000 dollars. The males in the city have a median income of 33,000 dollars against the females 26,000 dollars. The city’s per capita income stands at 21,000 dollars.

Philadelphia is also home to more than 500,000 immigrants. These figures are according to the 2008 census. Immigrants are still set to migrate into the city and just as the name suggests it is a city of brotherly love. As I said earlier, Philadelphia is a metropolitan city. Anyone can come into this city and feel at home because he or she will notice someone he or she can relate to. In order, the top 5 ancestries include Irish, Italian, German, Polish, and English. If you are from any of these countries, the Philadelphian people will make you feel at home. This city actually has the second largest Italian, Irish and Jamaican populations in the USA. The African American people in this city are also plenty. As a matter of fact, they are the fourth largest population in the nation. These African Americans also have a pleasant history. They created the first black Christian denomination, the African Methodist Episcopal Church prior to 1980. Furthermore, this city is home to the fourth largest Polish American population. Jews are also in plenty in this city. They are estimated to be the sixth largest in the country. These Jews created a congregation and synagogue in Philadelphia before the onset of the Revolutionary War of America. Do not make the mistake of thinking that these Jews came from Israel. Most of them came from Russia, Germany, Poland and Eastern Europe around the early twentieth century.

The Hispanic and Asian populations have not been left behind when it comes to population growth. There is a notable population of Hispanics around the city especially around the area of El Centro de Oro. This city is the home to the second largest Puerto Rican population in the USA. There is an Italian Market where the people of Philadelphia like shopping. This place is also surrounded by a lot of Mexican immigrants. South Americans are also plenty in this city. There is a large number of Mexicans, Guatemalans, and Colombians. This group of Southern Americans occupies South Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, and the Olney neighborhood.

The Asian community used to live in Chinatown but now they are almost everywhere. Koreans have occupied Olney whereas the Vietnamese have come up with bazaars next to the Italian Market which is in South Philadelphia. Cambodians can be found in large numbers both in North and South Philadelphia. The number of Asians in Philadelphia has made Philadelphia have one of the biggest populations of Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Koreans, and Indonesians in the US. Indians are also many.

Looking at how dynamic the people of Philadelphia are, you can be guaranteed to find a home in this city. In this city, you will find brothers.
